Christmas on the Box: Christmas Day Television

Merry Christmas from Find That Location! Here are our picks of the Christmas Day television selection to see you through from stockings to late night mince pies.

Even if you’re staying at home this year, Christmas TV will take you places. Jump in the DeLorean from 1985 to 1955 one last time before 2015 arrives or map Chitty’s real life progress as you watch an old classic.

And the Christmas specials are out in force, but we’ve got a few in particular circled in our TV guide.

10.55am ITV

Back to the Future

Would you rather travel back in time to the 1980s or 1950s? Opinion is split over her at Find That Location, but the general consensus is that we need to hire Marvin Berry next time we arrange a party.

The reconstructed Hill Valley set is still standing on a Hollywood backlot, but a good few Back to the Future filming locations are scattered across regular Los Angeles neighbourhoods.

11am BBC1

Only Fools and Horses: A Royal Flush

Another of the great Only Fools and Horses Christmas specials, this time the one where Rodney tries to get close to artist Vicky. When it’s revealed that her father is a duke, Del shows up at every opportunity. Let’s hope a typical visit to the real A Royal Flush theatre filming location is less eventful.

3.25pm Channel 5

Chitty Chitty Bang Bang

Another Find That Location favourite – it’s a true classic, but not only do we love the film itself, it makes use of loads of filming locations. Caractacus Potts’ windmill home, and those winding roads where they evade the Vulgarian spies, aren’t as close to the seaside as you’d think. It’s not all film trickery though, the Baron’s castle really does sit high up in the mountains.

8.45pm More4

Father Ted: A Christmassy Ted

Practice your most boring voice for a visit to Ireland’s biggest lingerie department. In the Christmas special, Ted and Dougal pay a visit to a real department store location and cause havoc for shoppers, before heading back to Craggy Island parochial house where their gift of a Teasmaid doesn’t go down as planned.

9pm ITV

Downton Abbey: Christmas Special

In the show’s grand tradition, ITV’s hit period melodrama looks set to do it again. Expect plenty of gasps as we return to Anna’s arrest and the Russian visitors, and as if that wasn’t enough, Rose’s parents are back on the scene. It’s not all drama though, the Downton Christmas Special 2014 promises festive moments aplenty, and there’s an extra Christmassy tie-in as Harry Potter location Alnwick Castle is set to guest star.

The real Downton Abbey location and the Crawleys’ London residence filming location are every bit as impressive in real life, and their past residents’ real lives have been just as turbulent. You can visit both of them on certain days throughout the year if you want to live out your Downton dreams!
